Our friend, Richard, was born and grew up in Santa Barbara. He has been in the state system since he was 6 years old and was imprisoned for over 50 years. When we met Richard he was out in De La Guerra Plaza tending to a homeless man who he’d been taking care of for weeks who finally needed medical attention at the hospital. Richard and a few Oceanhills team members helped the man get to the hospital and get him the treatment he needed. Since that day, we have developed a healthy friendship with Richard full of trust, reliability, and honesty. He works hard at Oceanhills Sunday Serve Teams, checks in regularly at the Loft, and while attending Alpha Class with Pastors Jon & Jono, deepened his relationship with Jesus Christ.
In the months we have known Richard, we have learned that he is someone who cares deeply about social justice in the world for all people. He’s been taking care of people on the streets of the same city he struggled growing up in for months, spending at minimum 30% of his income on food and medicine for strangers whose stories and circumstances break his heart. As a rehabilitated ex-con now walking alongside Jesus, who has lost much of his life to incarceration, we want our community to open their arms to embrace this wonderful man.
Richard needs an affordable home, but is on too long of a wait list for city housing. He needs employment and is willing to do anything to have a stable paycheck. If you or someone you know has a resource or opportunity for Richard, please email the church at firstname.lastname@example.org. Please pray with us and ask God to provide for Richards basic needs as he so selflessly provides for others in our town.
